Na božični večer John McClane na nabitem washingtonskem letališču čaka svojo ženo Holly, ki prihaja iz Los Angelesa. Med čakanjem opazi nekdanjega fanatičnega vojaškega oficirja, polkovnika Stuarta. Kljub svoji počitniški podobi se McClane odpravi za njim, ker se mu zdi stvar zelo sumljiva. In res Stuart iz torbe potegne pištolo ter strelja na svojega zasledovalca. Stuart poskuša s svojo ekipo osvojiti letališki stolp in računalniški sistem letališča. Ko zasedejo letališče, najprej pogasnejo luči, tako da nobeno letalo ne more pristati. Poleg tega začne močno snežiti, kar letalom še bolj otežuje pristanek. McClane poskuša po koščkih razkrinkati njihov načrt.

V zadnjem poglavju trilogije o družini Corleone si ostareli Michael prizadeva, da bi njegovi posli postali zakoniti in se kesa za pretekle grehe. Pod svoje okrilje vzame mladega nečaka Vincenta Mancinija.

V nedostopnem zakotju iraške puščave je ostrostrelec prikoval ob tla dva ranjena ameriška vojaka. Slišimo strele in udarce krogel ter zastrašujoč radijski glas napadalca. V obdobju vietnamske vojne spremljamo izkušnje J.T. Davisa »Jokerja« od rekruta do marinca, novinarja v Vietnamu. Narednik Hartman s svojim krutim pristopom načrtno uničuje samozavest in psiho mladih rekrutov, ter jih tako preoblikuje v marince, kakršne ameriška vojska potrebuje. V drugem delu zgodbe spremljamo Jokerja, ki se vključi v bitko, čeprav je njegova naloga novinarskega značaja.

Potem ko je v prvem filmu vrgel v zrak pol mesta in zagodel številnim posameznikom, so Ramba na koncu le ujeli. Sedaj ga srečamo v celici, kako z lahkoto lomi verige okoli sebe. Njegov nekdanji oficir iz Vietnama, Trautman, mu ponudi nalogo, da bi v jugovzhodni Aziji našel pogrešane Američane. Čeprav je vietnamske vojne že konec, tam kar mrgoli tujih vojakov. Resnični problem v Vietnamu pa Rambu ne predstavljajo tuji vojaki, ampak predvsem tisti, ki so mu nalogo naložili.

Policist John McClane ima tokrat opravka z norim bombašem Simonom. Ta se maščuje, ker mu je John pred leti ubil brata, in grozi z nadaljnimi eksplozijami. Nič hudega sluteč se v Simonovo igro miši in mačke vključi še Zeus, ki McClaneu reši življenje. Od njiju je odvisno, ali bo mesto zdaj, zdaj odneslo v zrak.
