Radnja filma Seobe prati sudbine srpskih vojnika i oficira u službi Habzburške monarhije krajem 18. veka. Tema velikih seoba Srba prikazana je kroz vojni pohod majora Vuka Isakoviča (Avtandil Makharadze) na čelu Slavonsko-podunavskog puka, od proleća 1744. do proleća sledeće godine. Uporedo sa ratnim dešavanjima razvija se nedozvoljena i strasna ljubavna veza čime se kreiraju dva paralelna, ali nerazdvojna toka priče.[6] Glavni lik romana i filma je oficir Vuk Isakovič, a njegov lik je suprotstavljen svom antipodu — mlađem bratu, trgovcu Aranđelu Isakoviču (Rišar Beri). Dinamika među njima odslikava simboličnu dvojnost unutar jedne nacije. Glavni ženski lik je Vukova supruga Dafina (Izabel Iper) koju on, kada krene u rat, ostavlja u kući svoga brata, koji se vremenom zaljubi u nju. Drugi tok drame prati ovu očajničku i pasioniranu ljubav između Aranđela i Dafine, koja se nesrećno završava njenim dugim bolovanjem i smrću.
