Oseanografen Steve Zissou jagar den mytomspunna haj som dödade hans partner Esteban. I besättningen återfinns bland andra hans fru, en journalist och en ung man som kan vara hans son.

När den unga Abby dyker blir hon vän med en praktfull läppfisk, som hon senare får veta är utrotningshotad. Då låter hon sig inspireras av sin aktivistiska mamma Dora och tar sig an tjuvjägare för att rädda sin vän.

Äventyrare, uppfinnare, filmskapare. Mannen i den röda mössan, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, var en mångsysslare vars vetenskapliga sinne och upptäckarglädje tog honom till havens djup för att utforska platser människan aldrig tidigare sett. Redan för över femtio år sen påtalade han hur klimathotet riskerade att sabotera ekosystemen under vattenytan. "Becoming Cousteau" skildrar 1900-talets främsta havsutforskare, som inspirerade efterföljande generationer att gå i hans fotspår och vårda vår värld.
