Bland annat utses professor Dolores Umbridge till ny lärare i Försvar mot Svartkonst på Hogwarts. Hennes lektioner lämnar dock de unga eleverna inkapabla att försvara sig mot de mörka krafter som hotar den. Efter lite övertalning från Hermione och Ron tar Harry saken i egna händer och tränar i hemlighet upp en liten grupp elever inför strid i svartkonst som han vet väntar dem.
