ในอนาคตสงครามทำให้โลกกลายเป็นยุคมืดอีกครั้ง ทั้ง 12 เขตตกอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของ “แคปิตอล” ที่กำหนดให้ทั้ง 12 เขตจะต้องส่งเด็กผู้หญิงหนึ่งและเด็กผู้ชายหนึ่ง เข้าร่วม Hunger Games ที่มีกฏง่ายๆคือให้เด็กทั้ง 24 คนต่อสู้กันต่อหน้าทีวีจนเหลือผู้รอดเพียงคนเดียวทุกปี เมื่อน้องสาวของ แคตนิส เอเวอร์ดีน (เจนนิเฟอร์ ลอว์เรนซ์) จากเขต 12 กลายเป็นผู้โชคร้ายคนล่าสุด เธอไม่มีทางเลือกนอกจากเสนอตัวเองแทน และต้องเดินทางไปเข้าร่วมเกมกับ พีตา เมลลาร์ก (จอช ฮัทเชอร์สัน) ตัวแทนจากเขตอีกคน โดยมี เกล (เลียม เฮมส์เวิร์ธ) เพื่อนสนิทของ แคทนิส ที่พยายามช่วยเธอจากเกมมรณะนี้... แคตนิส ต้องเลือกระหว่างมนุษยธรรมหรือการเอาตัวรอด ชีวิตหรือความรัก จุดมุ่งหมายเดียวก็คือการเอาชนะเกมล่าชีวิตเพื่อกลับบ้าน

เรื่องราวมิตรภาพที่ประทับใจของเพื่อนรักสองเผ่าพันธุ์ที่รักกันมาก ทั้งๆ ที่ทั้งคู่ควรจะเป็นศัตรูของซึ่งกันและกันตามสายพันธุ์บรรพบุรุษ เรื่องราวความสนุกสนานและการผจญภัยเริ่มขึ้น เมื่อหญิงม่ายชรารับเลี้ยงลูกสุนัขจิ้งจอกตัวหนึ่ง ชื่อว่า ท็อด แล้วเจ้าจิ้งจอกน้อยแสนซนตัวนี้ก็ได้เจอเพื่อนใหม่วัยเดียวกันชื่อ คอปเปอร์ ผู้มีสายพันธุ์สุนัขล่าเนื้อ แล้วทั้งคู่ก็เติบใหญ่มาด้วยกันในป่าแห่งนั้น เป็นเพื่อนรักที่ไม่มีใครจะมาแยกพวกมันจากกันได้ แต่แล้วมิตรภาพนี้ก็ถูกทดสอบ

หญิงคนหนึ่งผู้ถูกทิ้งให้เสียชีวิตกลางทะเลทรายหลังจากโดนทำร้ายร่างกายอย่างแสนสาหัสตัดสินใจออกล้างแค้นชายสามคนที่ทรยศเธอแบบเลือดต้องล้างด้วยเลือด

บิก เบเนดิกต์ เจ้าของฟาร์มที่ร่ำรวยและเจ็ตต์ ริงค์ คาวบอยที่ยากจนข้นแค้น ต่างก็จีบเลสลี ลินตัน หญิงสาวสวยจากแมริแลนด์ที่เพิ่งย้ายมาเท็กซัส เธอแต่งงานกับเบเนดิกต์ แต่เธอกลับตกใจกับความคิดเห็นที่เหยียดผิวของชาวเท็กซัสผิวขาวที่มีต่อคนในท้องถิ่นที่มีเชื้อสายเม็กซิกัน ริงค์ค้นพบน้ำมันบนผืนดินเล็กๆ และในขณะที่เขาใช้ทรัพย์สมบัติใหม่มหาศาลของเขาซื้อที่ดินทั้งหมดที่อยู่รอบๆ ฟาร์มเบเนดิกต์ ความขัดแย้งเรื่องอคติของครอบครัวเบเนดิกต์กลับจุดชนวนให้เกิดความขัดแย้งที่สืบทอดกันมาหลายชั่วอายุคน
