In Morocco, for years more and more women give birth outside of marriage, known as single mothers. In the predominantly Muslim country, this is still considered as a violation of law and religion but also of morals and traditions. The documentary JEWELS OF GRIEF explores this phenomenon with the biography of two single mothers in Morocco - Nadia and Nezha - who are ostracized by family, society and the state and suffer discrimination. Besides the two mothers in the film, also representatives of religion, humanitarian organizations, human rights groups and the Moroccan government state to speak. They explain their view of things, and illustrate the complexity of the dimensions of this phenomenon.

In the backseat of a car ride through the streets of Cairo, runs a one way dialogue where the language of a space or a film is inquired about. Intercutting the dialogue, a misfit, young ballerina, dwells in an unfinished interior of a house. She looks out of the windows onto the city. As the dialogue runs, the gaze of the ballerina and the camera replace one other interchangeably. Eventually, it is not identifiable of which the dialogue is indicative of.

GAZA.MP4 2024
“GAZA.MP4” is a meditation on the mundanity of hope in the aftermath of the war on Gaza post-7th October 2023. The video portrays scenes of daily life in Gaza through the lens of a disrupted communication between two friends, Diaa and Mohannad. Diaa requests filmmaker Mohannad to use his phone to capture raw visual materials during his displacement journey from Gaza, Khan Yunis, and Rafah since October. Mohammad’s compliance cements a bond forged during their student days and addresses the phenomenon of data clouding and transferring through alternative channels like Telegram. Using the chat window as a visual element to evoke a sense of our modern anxiety and the relentless pace induced by ADHD, the footage is received and processed by Diaa.
