Shu is from Datania, a country that makes young children work. He and his friends were trying to escape when they met the Returners. The Returners are some kind of rebels to Datania. Shu goes with the Returners to fight Zero, Nines, and his men who are after DT, a special substance inside humans.

The series focuses on the search of a young woman for her lost son. After discovering that her child may be living at an orphanage, she goes there under the alter ego of a humorous and magical nanny figure, touching and changing their lives.

It is the earliest BBC adaptation to exist in its entirety; the 1956 adaptation is completely lost, whilst only four of the 1966 adaptation's eight episodes are known to exist.
