As a joke, several members of the gang convince Farina, who is "brave but superstitious", that he's caused the demise of a young acquaintance and must therefore lay the body (actually still very alive) to rest in the old burying ground, under the watchful eye of "the graveyard witch". The joke backfires spectacularly on the pranksters.

Hal Doyle, son of the prison warden, falls in love with a portrait of Mollie Dare, who runs a reformatory for ex-convicts where they may work for honest wages. To win the girl he poses as the notorious Tucson Joe and goes to the reformatory where his reputation causes the other men to fear him. The real Tucson Joe arrives but does not reveal his identity.
A man, accidentally locked out of his house is mistaken for a burglar as he attempts to re-enter the house. The gag is that the person mistaking him, is an actual burglar thinking the man to be a rival to his score.
The respected gynecologist Prof. Hausen is averse to performing abortions. In contrast, his up-and-coming colleague Dr. Schäfer sees abortion as a means of helping women in need and openly advocates an amendment of the law. The professor’s convictions are shaken when misfortune befalls his own family. Louise Fleck presents her drama about the untimeliness of restrictive abortion legislation against the backdrop of modern urban reality. Seriousness, however, is preserved, because topics such as unwanted pregnancy, sexual violence, and the consequences of improperly performed abortions are not only addressed through minor characters, but also placed at the center of the cinematic narrative. School begins and some gang members are forging notes from their mother wanting out. Then too-young Wheezer parades by the school with escaped circus seals following him, causing a disturbance.
Gambler and fight promoter Jim Lambert, grants Gunner O'Brien his dying wish and agrees to care for Gunner's granddaughter, Mona, believing her to be a child. Mona turns out to be a beautiful young woman, however, and Jim overnight stops drinking and chasing skirts, becoming a devoted family man. Killer Gordon, one of Jim's fighters, becomes friendly with Mona, and Jim, believing that she loves Killer in return, himself turns for consolation to his former mistress, Yvonne, whom he asks to marry him.

Adele Dayton, a famous actress, visits her daughter, Mildred, whom she left with relatives as an infant. Her guardians, Mazie and John, permit the visit provided Adele conceals her relationship from Mildred. While Adele is there, she unintentionally attracts the admiration of Mildred's sweetheart, aspiring playwright David Starke, when she helps him sell one of his plays to a Broadway producer. David goes to New York city to open the play, neglecting Mildred. On opening night Mildred visits Adele and finds her in an embrace with David; she upbraids Adele for stealing David's affection from her and returns to her home in Massachusetts. Realizing she has hurt her own daughter, Adele sacrifices her love for David, snubbing him with a cold shoulder, he soon returns to Mildred and they marry.
