Salman Ahmad is the charismatic lead singer for the popular Pakistani rock group, Junoon. Following the ancient Sufi tradition, the band's music and lyrics reflect the moderate, liberal side of Islam. Salman has also become UNICEF's chosen spokesman for AIDS prevention, and he and the group have publicly advocated the cause of peace with India. But a coalition of fundamentalist Islamic parties has made recent gains in Pakistani elections, and Junoon's high profile places them in conflict with the hardliners. WIDE ANGLE follows Salman as he journeys to the tolerant, ancient city of Lahore and the fundamentalist stronghold of Peshawar to reveal the internal religious and political conflicts of the Islamic world. The mullahs want to ban the music but Junoon's fans, among them Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, have made Salman a rock idol. From this trip emerges a rich portrait of modern day Pakistan, a pivotal nation in the war against terror.

A young woman moves to Tokyo. Her quest to find spiritual values hidden in the modern city leads her to take photographs and ends in a pilgrimage to a remote cemetery in the mountains. Shot amongst the neon lights and crowds of Tokyo and the ancient graves and forestry in the Buddhist monastery town of Koyasan, The Mountain of Signs is a film homage to the essay form of zuihitsu in traditional Japanese literature. Its nameless female protagonist illustrates her surroundings through a diaristic monologue that combines poetry and philosophy.

The Wichí inhabit a wide geographic region, but their settlements are primarily located in the provinces of Formosa and Chaco, and in the eastern part of Salta. Formerly, they were hunter-gatherers who lived in small bands, with a strong tendency toward isolation from other bands. Today, the impossibility of exploiting the surrounding environment as they once did, the persistent Anglican preaching, economic pressure from whites, and their illnesses constitute a context in which many young people view abandoning their groups in search of a better future in towns and cities positively.

Jours en fleurs

Jours en fleurs 2003

"Jours en fleurs" is a reclamation of flower-power in which images of trees in springtime bloom are subjected to the floriferous ravages of menarcheal substance in a gestation of decay. The title is based on an expression from my coming-of-age in Acadian French Canada where girls would refer to having their menstrual periods as “être dans ses fleurs”. As a result of incubation in menstrual blood for several months, the original images inscribed on the emulsion undergo violent alterations. The shedding of the unfertilized womb depredates the fertilized blossoms and substitutes its own dark beauty.

Climate scenario where temperature rise causes hallucinogenic heat-stroke resulting in tropical mirages and double vision. The main focus in the videoworks ‘Level’, ‘Temperature Rising’ and ‘Bloomberg’ has been image and sound as equal units. This means that I’m trying not to put sound to image or image to sound but to work with the two in a parallel process where a motion can start in a picture and end up moving through sound. My interest in movements travelling through time in image and sound developed during my studies in visual art and electro-acoustic music.
