When her mother passes away, Farah is forced to return from Melbourne to Jakarta in order to care for her sister Rika. However, things are more complicated than they seemed for Farah soon discovers that there are two problems that she has to resolve: caring and providing for her and her sister and finding a new place to stay as their current home is rented after her mother sold their old home in order to allow Farah to study in Melbourne, which is now too expensive for her to pay by herself. A silver lining comes in the form of her mother’s will that informs her that they are still in possession of her mother’s first house, which she deemed was a good investment due to its strategic location among the upper class, but has failed to be sold due to the fact that the place is haunted. The two sisters move in, but strange things start to happen

According to the director: “The film deals with the corrosive effect, on a relatively advanced life, of what psychologists may call ‘the repressed’, while I prefer to concentrate on the beautiful Greek word ‘kaemos’ [καημός, translated as longing, unfulfilled desire]. The most ‘realistic’ and most synoptic… synopsis I can give for the fiction of the film is: ‘A man comes face to face with himself’, but this wording (and here comes the fantasy element) must be read literally.”

The world was in a cold war in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After the Sino-Soviet Treasure Island conflict, Beijing teenager Qi Weizhi evacuated with his mother to Hanzhong City in the hinterland of the Qinling Mountains, and experienced a pure juvenile sexual maturity out of touch with the political atmosphere of that era. Hanzhong was China's third-tier town during the Cold War. Mother Qi Xiuxuan deliberately concealed her husband's death because of her husband's emotional betrayal, and was quite indifferent to her son. Qi Weizhi's missing mother's love was rewarded by class teacher Zhou Wenyao, so he had a subtle affection for Zhou Wenyao.

The film begins with a new immigrant woman’s personal experience and goes on to depict the broken marriages of four immigrant women in Taiwan. They are faced with different family issues but all end up in failed marriages. Like other immigrant women, the four characters Yu-lan, Jin-lin, A-shi, and Mei-li all came to Taiwan in pursuit of happiness, only to find themselves disappointed.
