“Code of Tumas ” is an effort to show the well-known events and processes of history through the eyes of a direct person with a subjective and emotional look. Letters, publicism, all creations of Juozas Tumas Vaižgantas, also memories of his contemporaries make this reconstruction possible.

Robertas Verba’s first documentary film, described by film critic Živile Pipinyte as “the ‘ice-breaker’ which broke through the ice of Soviet ideology to form the peculiar stylistics of Lithuanian documentary film.” The hero of this film is the bright Lithuanian villager Anupras, whose archaic worldview becomes a symbol of the ethno-cultural Lithuanian identity that was often opposed to the identity constructed by Soviet propaganda.

To say life in Vilnius, Lithuania, during Soviet occupation was tense would be an understatement. People were followed and photographed; restaurant dinner plates were bugged to catch potentially illicit conversations; car accidents were staged to waylay people while surveillance equipment was installed in their apartments; and many were detained, interrogated, imprisoned, or worse. Through expertly assembled KGB archival footage, earnest present-day interviews, and cleverly crafted returns-to-the-scene-of-the-crime, directors Maxì Dejoie and Virginija Vareikyté present an acutely compelling contemplation of a “non war” from both sides.

In the small Lithuanian town, a prison transforms into a migration center amidst a significant crisis. Housing men from the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa, it becomes a modern-day Tower of Babel. Residents find solace in communal activities like cooking and praying, connecting to their roots. It's only in sleep that they break free from the migration center, dreaming of their homelands - the plains of Africa, bustling streets of India, and war-torn cities of the Middle East. Over time, as walls are repainted and relationships form between migrants and staff, the center changes. A year later, it empties suddenly, leaving behind a silence and a reminder of the impermanence of life.
