Fifteen years ago, the Union of Estonian Architects commissioned a film about its birth, history and activities. It was supposed to premiere at the gala celebrating the Union’s 85th year of activity, but after a few minutes the equipment started to malfunction, the film ended up in a drawer and was since forgotten. However, on the eve of the Union’s centenary, the film was dusted off and a fresh section on the activities of the past fifteen years was added.

Documentary about Estonian rock music as a birth-story of a fresh thought in the contradictional Soviet cultural space. A world of contrasts – pioneers placing flower chaplets to Lenin’s monument and Scott McKenzie “If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear flowers in your head”. First Estonian beat-bands were born already in the early 60’s. Names like “Juuniorid”, “Rütmikud”, “Optimistid”, “Mikronid”, “Kristallid”, “Virmalised” and a lot of others, not so well known, performed almost every week on youth dance-nights. The repertoire was mainly acquired by listening and recording music from foreign radio stations with the static noise of the radio. Radio Luxemburg and a lot of other radio stations playing new music, like Radio Caroline and Radio Sweden, became windows to the music world. On 28 April, 1968, the Puhkeparkide Direktsioon and Tallinn Beat Club organized the first festival-like youth music event in Estonia and in whole Soviet Union.

Mosquito and Horse

Mosquito and Horse 1999

1

The film's narrative is based on a traditional Estonian fairytale, telling the story of a group of mosquitoes that challenge a horse to a contest of strength. As the film begins, it evokes an almost documentary sensibility, in part through its use of voice-over narration (in English). Though the film might at first seem to be a relatively traditional work, it is not long until this impression changes, and drastically. The character design and voice recording, along with fantastically unrestricted cinematography and editing, combine with folk songs (sung in Estonian, with English subtitles) that might be described as 'quirky' or maybe just 'really odd.' Some dialogue is presented in 'word bubbles' printed on the film as well. So much is going on, on so many levels, that the film defies its viewer to look away -- and who would want to? It's all wonderful. The Mosquito and the Horse clearly demonstrates how successful a film can be operating outside the classical Hollywood model.

"Sunrise" delves into the depths of the human soul, where traditional notions of good and evil dissolve into the infinite diversity of subjective perception. The film tells the story of a young girl, Iris, who grew up in a 20th-century Estonian Christian family. Driven by a thirst for love and a longing for material beauty, she commits a minor crime that becomes the catalyst for an internal struggle and a reevaluation of her former moral principles. This act inevitably leads to a profound conflict: as she reflects on everything she knew about Christianity, God, and morality, a question arises… What place do her desires hold within the dogmatic frameworks she once accepted? The second important character, a boy named Knut, grew up in a troubled family under the tyranny of a cruel father. Yet, despite retaining love for his mother, he is tormented by emotions accumulated from years of endured brutality. Upon encountering Iris’s impoverished family, he finds a way to release his anger…
