When this film reached the editing table, the British newspaper The Guardian, which reaches thirty million readers, featured an article by renowned chess writer Leonard Barden, “Pride of Estonia: Paul Keres, one of the best to never hold chess world crown”. “Keres became a national hero for Estonians,” writes Leonard Barden, who believed that the Soviet authorities forced him to play badly at the 1948 World Championship tournament. Most of the professionals who appear in the film also agree with the theory that Paul Keres was influenced by the Soviet authorities. But some disagree.

After ten years in a Soviet labour camp in Karaganda, the Estonian artist Ülo Sooster (1924‒1970) didn’t return to his homeland but settled in Moscow and became the most influential trend-setter for a whole generation of Soviet non-conformist artists. Narrated by the artist’s son Tenno-Pent Sooster, this film features rare footage and interviews with Sooster’s contemporaries in the 1960s, as well as leading experts from the Kumu Art Museum, the Tartu Art Museum and The Tretyakov Gallery.

“Client’s Day” shows gentrification in progress as it has reached Tallinn. It reflects on the artist’s role within those processes as they are usually the first ones arriving to previously derelict areas and creating value – to be later pushed out once it becomes too expensive. In this video the real estate broker speaks about the future as present, ignoring the actual present – the artists who are there at the moment, as they are often seen as temporary hole fillings. Another issue the artist tackles is the tension between building new buildings and reusing the old ones. The 1980s panel block architecture depicted in the video used to be considered ugly. However, it may become more and more appealing as the gentrification moves on.
