Abe Nathan: As the Sun Sets

Abe Nathan: As the Sun Sets 2005

1

Abe Nathan, one of Israel’s most beloved heroes, was a peace advocate, a rebel, and a shining example of humanity. He became an international sensation in 1966 with his one-man mission for peace that inspired John Lennon to immortalize his name in the song “Give Peace a Chance”. He ran a pirate radio station, organized humanitarian aid missions and was imprisoned for his secret meetings with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. This profile shows Nathan in his later years, still fighting to offer hope in an increasingly hostile world.

Fadhumo and Helen are two refugees, one living in Tel Aviv and the other in Berlin who are asking for asylum. While they both try to cope with a life full of discrimination and alienation away from home, they become determined social activists to help women who live hard lives like themselves. The documentary shot by Efrat Shalom Danon and Gili Danon provides a realistic point of view to the unstable lives controlled by the government policies, to Israeli and German immigration policies, and, despite all this, to the lives of people who dream while standing on their kindness.

The Diaries of Yossef Nachmani

The Diaries of Yossef Nachmani 1970

1

A look into the complex and contradictory personality of Yossef Nachmani, the man largely responsible for the first Zionist settlements in the Galilee. As director of the Jewish National Fund office in the Galilee, Nachmani acquired as much land from Arabs as possible to establish Jewish settlements upon it. The film focuses on events in Tiberius, Nachmani's hometown, a mixed community where Arabs and Jews coexisted harmoniously. Nachmani left behind a fascinating series of diaries that shed new light upon events in the Galilee during those years. Through these diaries, the film examines the critical early years of Zionism and the beginning of the Jewish-Arab conflict from his unique perspective. This provocative historical documentary is sure to become a significant document in the ongoing debate about the basic foundation myth of Israel.

The absurdist comedy-drama is centred around a Shmelky puppet (something like a Jewish version of the Muppet Show heroes), which experiences an identity crisis traditional for comedy actors: he thinks of himself as a grand dramatic artist and doesn’t want to sing songs about Shabbat and Mitzvahs in a children’s show anymore. Instead, he wants to perform in a hideous one-man show that he wrote. After his attempts to get rid of the role he is stuck in fail, Shmelky falls into despair - until the entire country, brought up on his simple shows, says to him: “In our complicated world the Chosen People very much need a purple puppet who tells them about Mitzvahs.”
