Mexican feature film

Requested by their friend who has a terminal illness, the Mexican group "Los Humildes" plays a benefit concert to raise funds for a orphanage.

Its production seems like a game: throwing a Super 8 camera, turned on and recording, from what was, at that time, the tallest building in Caracas. The film films the shots of its own accelerated fall, a succession of chromatic shots that cannot be identified either in terms of what is “recorded” in each one (windows, columns, walls, sky or floor) or in its own formal configuration as an image (color, composition, shapes or figures). What is perceived and apprehended is the impotence of vision – of perception – to distinguish this extreme and exhausting mobility, this vertigo of “free fall.”

Dressed as a virgin mother, Michel Journiac tears down his garment and reveals a rag doll tied to his belly. He frees it carefully, presses it against his heart and caresses it gently, then he smears it with blood and stuffs it with raw meat dripping with blood. Finally, he wraps it slowly in a white shroud, he buries it, then collapses to the ground, overcome by grief. This action took place without an audience and was prepared with a screenplay.

When her lesbian affair with Regine hits the rocks, Anna needs to escape her job as a photographer, her home, her friends and everything that reminds her of the past and so she aims a borrowed Volkswagen van for the south of France and steps on the gas pedal. As she travels, her daydreams take on the force of reality as she fantazises about the past with Regine, yet the change in color tonalities of her imaginings and other camera tricks contrast her make-believe world with the scenic countryside and picturesque villages she passes on her way. As the road unspools before her like a role of film, images from her mind's storehouse of reels flash by - and the parallels between traveling away and mentally going back become clearer, for as the title suggests, she has to "depart to arrive."

Aloual, the black pearl leads an initiatory journey which is a quest for the part of mystery and the wild side that lays deep inside each of us.
