The friendship of a doctor Vitolis Laumakys and an engineer Adolfas Morėnas started in 1962, while fixing a broken motorcycle. That very same year they set up an amateur film studio by the name “The Amateur”. Gradually it became one of the most successful amateur film studios in Lithuania, and their second home. In five decades they created almost a hundred of short films. Although Vitolis and Adolfas are still actively working – digitalizing their film archives, “The Amateur” is facing some unpleasent changes.

Glastnost and Lithuania’s eventual independence from the USSR open up the possibility of examining previously banned subjects: death, postwar resistance and – as in We Were at Our Own Field – the damage done by the Soviet occupation and the simple longing for home.

Albertas, a lift-operator, sits all day waiting for someone to ring the elevator. His wait transcends his sense of community and symbolism, a sign that someone needs him. The film, rife with surreal humor, is the documentary version of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’.

There is no shortage of activities for the little ones here - under the supervision of the kindergarten staff, they play sports, have health checks, dance, sing and play, and lunch and bedtime are not forgotten.

The legendary street fashion icon Rožytė, has been wandering the streets of the capital for several decades, delighting passers-by and tourists. Summer is replaced by autumn, winter by spring.
