Gustoniai in Gustoniai

Gustoniai in Gustoniai 2020

1

Gustoniai is a village located in the northern part of Lithuania. This place also lends its name to a contemporary art project that commenced in 2001. Every three years, artist Darius Ziura shoots a one-minute video portrait of every villager that has agreed to participate in the project. These portraits are then pieced together and edited into a film. With every episode, the project expands it’s time spectrum, thus reflecting on changes both in people’s age and lifestyle, as well as the evolution of social structures and processes, which are affected by the changing socio-political situation in the country. This project also reflects on the rapid changes in filming techniques and editing strategies, presenting the different trends of visual culture of every period.

Vulkanovka. After the Great Cinema

Vulkanovka. After the Great Cinema 2005

Vulkanovka is a poor village in Crimean steppe, as local people say, forgotten by God and by people. Nonetheless that place came very much alive when famous Lithuanian film director Sharunas Bartas crew stayed here for almost two years filming Seven Invisible Men. Most of local people helped filmmakers a good deal. But the Grand Cinema left and probably won’t come back. So the life of Vulkanovka returned to its usual routine. But it’s not for everyone. Film director Giedre Beinoriute with her crew came to Vulkanovka nine months later. In her documentary people speak about their “cinematographic” experience with great enthusiasm. They tell about how it was and how it was different from their earlier understanding about filmmaking. Different moods and people’s openness in the film are interwoven into daily life of Vulkanovka with its rituals of caws’ feeding, shopping in the only shop “Produkty”, collecting metal and other.

Sacred Time

Sacred Time 2020

While seeking to reveal the beauty of the Gregorian chant tradition and the secret of its appeal, the film asks what could be considered as sacred time in our secular lives. In the prevailing chaos, it is rather hard to keep direction. Caught in that hastle and bustle, you end asking yourself what to fill the day with, so that at night before sleep you could feel not a fleeting and fictitious, but solidly stable meaning, so that you could fall asleep with a feeling of calmness that you have lived a day being useful, and not only for yourself. Jokūbas Vilius Tūras was born in Zarasai, Lithuania in 1971, currently doing doctoral studies at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. His feature debut „Dreaming the Path“ (2013) was awarded the National Film Award winner for the Best Documentary of the Year. „About Jonas“ (2016) gained National Film Awards nominations for the Best Director and the Best Film of the Year.

Leaps to Dance, Loves to Sing 1974

The director shows us an unofficial Lithuania, an indestructible village, old traditions and impressive faces. In the films of Shablevičius, the village, the land, the lonely tree standing outside are often filmed in winter, when everything gets the shade of a fairy tale and a miracle, and a rider on the road brings an unexpected message. The old mythical rural worldview seems to come alive in the eyes of the audience.

In the last 7 years I lived in 5 countries, in 7 cities and in 16 homes. Now I only have three days to pack my things. It‘s my sixteenth home, sixteenth room from which I‘ll move myself out. I am packing things and through my window I see another 215 windows. Through these windows I see immigrants, couples, misfortunes. Some read, some play, some sleep, some learn to walk on the balance beam, they come in, they go out. I am filming so I wouldn‘t forget about them.
